What is log and branch processing?

Log and branch processing is the work that finishes a tree job. After a tree is trimmed, storm-damaged or felled, the timber is cut into manageable lengths, branches and foliage are chipped, and everything is hauled away. Green waste and debris disposal is included, so nothing is left on your lawn or driveway.

It is different from lopping and pruning. Those services shape or reduce a living tree, while processing deals with the material that comes down afterwards. It most often follows tree removal, storm cleanup or large trimming jobs.

Leaving it to the property owner is rarely a good idea. Green timber is heavy, branches can be under tension, and clearing a large tree by hand takes far longer than most people expect. Trees Down Under handles it all with our own crane, chipper and crew, so there are no extra fees for the equipment and the site is left clean. Before any tree is removed, council permit requirements should be checked, and we can help with that. Call 0475 463 597 any time to arrange a free inspection and same-day quote, with no call-out fee.

How arborists break down branches and trunks safely

Weight checks and support come first

Before any saw starts, our AQF Level 3-5 certified arborists check how heavy each branch is and where that weight will go once it is cut. Anything too heavy or risky is supported or lowered with our own crane fleet, with no extra fees for the crane.

The three-cut method for branches

  1. Notch cut: a small notch about a quarter of the branch diameter, roughly 60-90cm from the trunk, so the bark does not split.
  2. Relief cut: about 30cm from the branch collar, cut right through to remove the weight.
  3. Final cut: made at the branch collar, so the tree can heal cleanly.

Every cut has a reason. Get the order wrong on a heavy branch and the bark tears or the limb drops where it shouldn’t.

Notch and back cut when felling

For tree removal, a notch goes on the side facing the fall direction, then a back cut on the opposite side. Large or leaning trunks call for quarter-cut or split level back cuts. Council permit requirements should be checked before any tree comes down, and we can help with that. Call 0475 463 597 any time for a free tree inspection and same-day quote.

Why large and awkward timber needs a professional

When DIY becomes risky

Heavy or unsupported branches, leaning trees and tall trees with thick foliage are harder to handle than they look. Very large trunks need a quarter-cut back cut, and small leaning trees call for a split level back cut. Each carries a real risk of injury and property damage. Always confirm council permit requirements before tree removal starts.
