When a permit is usually required
Katoomba sits under Blue Mountains City Council, so many tree removal jobs need an Approval to Manage Trees or Vegetation before any cutting starts. Tree removal council approval is usually needed if the tree is:
- 3 m or taller, or has a canopy spread over 3 m
- heritage-listed or in a heritage conservation area
- a species protected under the council’s Development Control Plan (DCP)
Thresholds differ between suburbs. Neighbouring Blaxland, for example, uses 4 m for height and crown spread, so check the rules for your exact address.
Dead or dangerous trees
Exemptions can apply to trees that are dead or pose an immediate risk to people or structures. If a tree is unsafe right now, call 0475 463 597 any time and a certified arborist will advise on the safest next step.
How we help with the application
Trees Down Under works out whether your tree needs a permit before removal, prepares an arborist report to support the application, and guides you through lodging it with council, online or in person.
We work with every local council in Sydney. Permits don’t have to be a headache when an arborist helps you through them.
