When a permit is usually required
Katoomba sits under Blue Mountains City Council. For tree removal, council approval may be needed: an owners corporation may need an ‘Approval to Manage Trees or Vegetation’ permit, lodged through the council, before a tree is removed or heavily pruned.
A permit is usually needed when the tree meets any of these triggers:
- It stands three metres or taller
- Its canopy spread is over three metres
- It is heritage-listed or in a heritage conservation area
- It is a species protected under the council’s Development Control Plan (DCP)
The exemption for dead or dangerous trees
A dead tree, or one posing an immediate risk, is generally exempt from permit requirements. Strata managers still benefit from confirming the exemption applies before work starts, so the committee has a clear record.
We work with every local council in Sydney. Permits don’t have to be a headache for a strata committee.

How the team confirms and prepares approvals
During the free tree inspection, the arborist checks the tree against these triggers and confirms whether a permit is needed. Where one is, the team prepares the application early. Council approval can delay a job, so raising it at the start keeps the schedule realistic and avoids surprises for the committee.
