Footings and drainage behind a retaining wall
What sits underground matters as much as the stump itself. Before any cutting starts, the crew checks for footings, agricultural drains and weep holes behind the wall, then marks them out. The grinder works in shallow passes and stops short of any marked line, so the wall and its drainage stay undisturbed.
Fence posts, panels and tied-in root plates
Where a fence line runs close to the stump, panels can be shielded and the cutting angle set away from the posts. If the root plate is tied into a wall or slab, the crew grinds the visible stump and leaves any roots that could shift the structure when disturbed.
There’s no single safe distance for every garden. We look at what’s underground first, then decide how the machine works beside the wall.

Limited room for the machine
Tight side access can rule out a larger grinder. The AQF Level 3-5 certified arborists choose a narrower unit where needed, and also weigh stump size and species, soil type, slope, and nearby pool surrounds or garden edging.
