An exemption does not end council interest in a tree. Even where one applies, officers can still look at the removal if it affects neighbourhood character, shade or ecological value. Height, trunk diameter, species and proximity to waterways and bushland are all common triggers, and native species attract higher protection.
Officers also check whether the problem could be solved another way. They want to know if pruning, crown reduction or root management would manage the risk without taking the tree out. That is why a clear arborist report matters before any tree removal goes ahead. It records the tree’s condition, the risk of failure, its proximity to buildings and utilities, and why removal was the minimum action needed.
Trees Down Under’s AQF Level 3-5 certified arborists document this properly, and council officers rely heavily on qualified arborist recommendations.
